Day 20 – The Leaders Behind the Leader
Day 20 – The Leaders Behind the Leader
April 20, 2026 — Monday
Leadership can look strong on the outside.
Decisive.
Clear.
In control.
But what most people don’t see is this:
The strongest leaders are the ones who are being led well themselves.
Yesterday made that clear.
Building an Inner Circle
I started the morning with something new.
A smaller group just my core leaders from ROI.
Not to talk about ROI.
Not to run the organization.
But to talk about life.
family
business
personal struggles
direction
Because I realized something:
You can’t lead people well…
if you don’t have a place where you can be honest yourself.
The Gap I Didn’t See Before
ROI is built on helping others.
Discipleship.
Growth.
Accountability.
But for the leaders?
We didn’t have that same space.
And that’s a problem.
Because leadership can get isolating fast.
Why It Matters
You can’t always open up to the people you’re leading.
Not fully.
Not the same way.
And without an inner circle…
Pressure builds… quietly.
So this space matters.
Not just for strategy…
But for health.
Watching Transformation in Real Time
One moment stood out.
A year ago, one of the guys in the group was stuck.
No direction.
No clarity.
Trying to figure out his next move.
I’ve been there.
I know what that feels like.
And now…
He owns a business.
It’s growing.
It’s working.
And I got to witness that transformation.
Up close.
Why That Hits Different
Because it’s not just about business success.
It’s about direction.
Clarity.
Movement.
And knowing that some of the conversations we had…
Helped him get there.
The Pattern in the Day
The rest of the day followed a similar theme.
I took one of my leaders to lunch.
Not for performance.
Not for metrics.
Just to connect.
Because at the end of the day…
Systems build structure.
But people build everything else.
The Reminder
You can have:
great processes
strong systems
clear execution
But if your people don’t feel valued…
It doesn’t last.
An Unexpected Moment
Later in the day, something else happened.
A situation came up involving someone trying to provoke a reaction.
Stir things up.
Push boundaries.
Get a response.
And I watched how it was handled.
Calm.
Composed.
Measured.
What That Showed Me
It reminded me:
Not every challenge comes in obvious ways.
Some come disguised as:
questions
pressure
confrontation
Looking for a reaction.
Looking for a mistake.
The Difference
And in that moment, I saw it clearly:
Maturity shows up in how you respond…
not how you react.
The Tension
Who are you becoming when pressure hits?
Who do you have around you…
When you need to process life honestly?
Because leadership without support…
Eventually collapses under its own weight.
The Anchor
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17
Not alone.
Together.
Closing Thought
You don’t build strong leadership in isolation.
You build it in circles.
The people behind you…
determine how well you can lead in front of you.
