The First 40 Days in Ministry

This is the process documented in real time.

Day 33 – When You Don’t Feel Ready, Step Up Anyway

May 3, 2026 — Sunday

Some days have a clear theme.

This one didn’t...
until I looked back.

And realized…

This day was about stepping up before you feel ready.

A Full-Circle Moment

My mom joined the church.

She signed up for the classes at church, the process of really stepping in.

She was dressed up.

Nervous.

Excited.

She looked at me and said:

“I feel like it’s the first day of school.”

And I just paused.

Because I remembered…

Many years ago…

She was the one walking me into school.

Now here we are.

Roles reversed.

I was walking her into something new.

And it hit me:

Growth never stops.

It just changes form.

Seeing the Bigger Picture

The rest of the day was packed.

Teams moving.

People serving.

Systems running.

And for the first time…

I found myself stepping back more…

Watching everything from a higher level.

Looking for:

  • what’s working

  • what’s not

  • where the gaps are

Because leadership at this level isn’t about doing everything…

It’s about seeing everything.

Then Came the Moment

We had two trainings scheduled.

Usher team.
Cafe team.

Plans changed last minute.

Communication didn’t come through.

No notes.

No outline.

No preparation.

And suddenly…

I was the one up.

No Script. No Plan. Just Faith

I remember thinking:

“Alright… this is leadership.”

So I did what I’ve learned to do:

I prayed.

“God… be my mouthpiece.”

Just like Moses asked.

And Then It Happened

I started speaking.

And something shifted.

The words started flowing.

Clarity. Direction. Energy.

And I knew..

This isn’t coming from me.

I’ve felt it before.

In small groups.

In messages.

But this was different.

This was in real time.

With no safety net.

And The Team Felt It Too

You could see it:

  • attention locked in

  • energy rising

  • people leaning forward

Not because of me…

But because something bigger was happening.

The Realization

God doesn’t wait for you to feel ready.

He responds to your willingness.

Because if you wait until you’re prepared…

You’ll miss the moment.

What I Learned

There are going to be times in leadership where:

  • you don’t have the notes

  • you don’t have the plan

  • you don’t have the answers

And in those moments…

You have two choices:

Pull back…
or step up.

And When You Step Up

That’s where faith shows up.

The Confirmation

After it was done…

My pastor stepped in.

We swapped.

High-fived.

And I knew in that moment:

I can do this.

Not on my own…

But with God.

The Deeper Why

What made it meaningful wasn’t the moment itself…

It was what it represents.

Because I know what it feels like to not be built up.

To not be encouraged.

To be surrounded by people who tear you down.

And now…

I get to do the opposite.

I get to rally people.

The Anchor

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness…”
2 Corinthians 12:9

Closing Thought

You don’t need to have it all figured out.

You don’t need to feel ready.

You just need to be willing.

For my mother it was starting school again.

For me it was leading the class.

Because when you step into the moment…

God will meet you there.
